Whitchurch 8 vs Evesham 7
The reds finished off their league season with a fine away win in horrible conditions.
The Whitchurch team travelled the long journey to Evesham with a much-changed side from the team that had scored 148 points in their last two games. Injuries and unavailability saw several players either debuting or coming out of retirement but the spirit in the club and team carried it through. The one point victory seems to indicate a close run match but the visitors were on top for the whole game and only some fierce resistance and brave tackles kept the score down. The rain and heavy pitch caused many errors on both sides and it was not until just before half time that the Edgeley Park men went ahead.
Nathan Horton picked up at the back of the ruck and sprinted forward. Just as he was tackled, he managed to offload to Mike Oakden who scooped the ball up to winger James Marvell who crossed in the corner. The second half started in similar fashion but handling errors came thick and fast in the slippery conditions. On a rare attacking move by Evesham, Whitchurch were shocked by some good play by their hosts and saw them cross for a converted try. The Shropshire men shook themselves up and set up attack after attack. They were repelled by brave, tenacious but often illegal resolve. Danny Nicholas took advantage of one of these infringements to kick over a penaltyto regain the lead. The game then fizzled out leaving Whitchurch in ninth place at the finish.
