Whitchurch 2nd’s 0 v Barton Under Needwood 26
This was the first time this season we have managed to field a full squad of 20 for the second team against one of the league’s top teams who in the fixture earlier in the season came out on top 107 : 0
Whitchurch started well and for the first 20 minutes were enjoying a decent amount of possession and territory. Both teams were strong in defence and it was still 0-0 a quarter of the way into the match.
Barton made the breakthrough off a set piece, a well worked move finding space for them to score under the posts. A second try quickly followed after an unfortunate collision between Whitchurch players. After two failed attempts to secure the ball in the ensuing scramble, Barton made it 12-0 at the break.
The second half started well for Whitchurch again, and we did create chances but a deserved try didn't come. Barton made possession count to make it 19-0 with another well worked try.
Whitchurch came close to a try with 10 minutes to go but Bartons defence combined to drive Whitchurch back from the try line. With Whitchurch desperately seeking a try, Barton found space with the last play of the game to make it 26-0.
Barton deserved the victory but Whitchurch would have deserved a couple of scores. An enjoyable but frustrating game in front of a brilliant home crowd, the match played in good spirit, a much improved showing on the previous defeat to Barton Under Needwood.
Whitchurch were pleased to field a full squad with a blend of youth and experience which is encouraging as we build for the future. Next week the 2nd.’s are away at Cannock where they will be looking for their first away win of the season.
